Winter. It’s cold, it’s dark and if you don’t have a tropical island getaway planned over the next couple of months, it feels like an awful long time to wait until summer.
Kiwis eat more ice cream per capita than anyone else in the world, so it’s not like we need convincing to eat the stuff.
Maybe it’s because we’ve got the creamiest ice cream on the planet, or maybe it’s because we know how beneficial the sweet treat can be - but in case you don’t - here’s five reasons why eating ice cream in winter is a cool idea.
Eating ice cream may help warm you up
You know the old wives’ tale about drinking a cup of hot tea on a hot day to cool down? Seems counterintuitive, but science has proven it is actually true. So it’s entirely plausible that the opposite is true - ingesting something cold will help raise your core temperature as your body works to counteract its chillsome effects. While we couldn’t find any actual scientific evidence proving or disproving this theory, we’d love to know - why not grab a bowl of the creamy goodness in the name of scientific research and find out for yourself.
Happy vibes
Eating ice cream make you happy. Neuroscientists in London found a spoonful of the frozen treat lights up the same pleasure centre in the brain as winning money or listening to your favourite music. Neuroscientists at the Institute of Psychiatry in London carried out brain scans while people were eating vanilla ice cream, and found it had an instant effect on parts of the brain known to activate when people enjoy themselves. So go on … have a scoop and feel those winter blues drain away.
Netflix and chill
We naturally have less energy in winter. Listen to your body and if it’s relaxation and restoration you’re craving, then postpone today’s to-do list and chill.
Netflix, Lightbox, Sky TV: whatever your poison, there are so many good shows on the box right now. Curling up on the couch in your slippers and pajamas with your favourite TV show and a scoop or two of ice cream is what winter is all about.
Vitamin D
Known as the sunshine vitamin, it’s not surprising we can struggle to get adequate amounts of this important vitamin during winter when the days are shorter and we tend to stay indoors more. Enter ice cream! Not many foods contain Vitamin D, but ice cream does.
Relive summer
Ahh, remember the golden days of summer? The sand between your toes, burning your legs on hot car seats, sunburned noses and licking melted ice cream off your fingers? Those were the days. Crank up the heater, don your jandals and pop a scoop of your favourite ice cream in a waffle cone and lick your way back to those summer good times.
